When it comes to traveling, ensuring your safety and security is of utmost importance. One area that requires particular attention is your hotel room. By practicing situational awareness and employing secure methods, you can enhance your safety and peace of mind while staying in hotels. Here are my top 10 tips when your travel involves a stay in hotels:
1. Choose Your Hotel Wisely
Before booking a hotel, do your research. Look for hotels that prioritize security measures such as 24-hour front desk service, CCTV surveillance, and secure access to floors and rooms. A hotel that requires your room key to access your room floor in the elevator is a great start. Check online reviews to gauge the overall safety reputation of the hotel.
2. Be Mindful of Your Surroundings
Once you’ve checked into your hotel room, take a moment to familiarize yourself with your surroundings. Note the location of emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and other safety features. This knowledge will be invaluable in the event of an emergency. A quick exit may be the difference between becoming a statistic or not.
3. Keep Your Door Locked
Always keep your hotel room door locked, even when you’re inside. NEVER prop your room door open when going to get ice our use the vending machine down the hall. It only takes seconds for someone to slip inside your room and wait for your return. I use a door stop with an alarm, the deadbolt and chain lock, and for more added security I may add my own travel portable door lock. Lastly, if someone unexpectedly knocks on your door, verify their identity using the peephole before opening it.
4. Secure Your Valuables
Use the hotel’s safe or lockbox to store your valuables such as passports, cash, and electronics. If a safe is not available, consider using a travel lock to secure your belongings. Your mindset should be that someone may enter my room and there are things that I need secured.
5. Use Privacy Measures
Ensure your privacy by using the peephole before opening the door to strangers. If your hotel room has a balcony or large windows, be cautious of potential onlookers and consider using the curtains or blinds for added privacy. Treat balconies and windows as access points, regardless of your room being on the first of seventh floor.
6. Be Cautious with Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi networks in hotels may not always be secure. Avoid accessing sensitive information or making online transactions when connected to these networks. Instead, consider using a virtual private network (VPN) for added security.
7. Report Suspicious Activity
If you notice any suspicious activity or individuals in or around the hotel, report it to the hotel staff or authorities immediately. Your vigilance could help prevent potential security threats.
8. Be Discreet with Personal Information
Avoid discussing personal information, such as your room number or travel plans, in public areas where others may overhear. This precaution will help protect your privacy and reduce the risk of becoming a target for theft or scams. So many times I am sitting in the airport at my gate waiting on my flight and I over hear people on their cell phones discussing business travel plans to include locations, times and event engagements. Be cognizant of your surroundings and conscious of what you may be discussing.
9. Use the Do Not Disturb Sign
When you’re in your hotel room, use the “Do Not Disturb” sign to indicate that you’re present. This simple measure can deter potential intruders from attempting to enter your room.
10. Trust Your Instincts
This has to be the most important of all the above tips. Lastly, trust your instincts. If something feels off or suspicious, don’t hesitate to take action. It’s better to be safe and NOT become a statistic than be sorry when it comes to your personal safety and security.
By following these secure methods and practicing situational awareness, you can significantly enhance your safety while staying in hotel rooms. Remember, your well-being is paramount, and taking proactive measures will ensure a more secure and enjoyable travel experience.
